On April 6th, 2025, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Detroit Fashion Choice Awards at the historic Garden Theater—and let me tell you, it was nothing short of magical. This annual event is all about honoring the creativity, talent, and innovation that fuel Detroit’s vibrant fashion community, and this year’s celebration raised the bar.
From the moment I stepped onto the red carpet, I could feel the energy. The style was unmatched—bold colors, daring silhouettes, and so much individuality. Detroit doesn’t just follow trends, we set them. It was incredible to be surrounded by so many designers, stylists, influencers, and creatives who are truly shaping the future of fashion.
From Chaos to Chic: The Story Behind My Look
VIP arrivals started at 6PM. At 5:00PM, I had no hair done, no makeup on, and NO DRESS. Yes, you read that right.
By 5:30PM, I was at the mall on a mission, giving myself 10 minutes to find something—anything—that felt like me. And wouldn’t you know it… the very first dress I tried on was the one. Classic, feminine, and full of attitude. The store steamed it for 15 minutes (which, spoiler alert: didn’t really help), and I raced home to pull myself together.
I had planned to steam the dress by running a hot shower for 15 minutes—that also did not work. So what did I do? I grabbed the iron like the DIY queen I am, worked some magic, and somehow got myself to the event by 8:15PM.
The final look? It was giving 1950s meets modern woman glam. Slicked back mob boss hair, dramatic eyes, and a dress that moved like poetry. I felt feminine, empowered, and honestly… a little proud of the chaos I survived to pull it off. What did you think?

Co-hosted by the effortlessly charismatic Sabrina Athena and Daniel Baxter, the awards ceremony was nothing short of spectacular. Attendees were treated to live performances, fashion showcases, and powerful speeches that reminded us why Detroit’s fashion scene is so special—it’s raw, real, and rooted in authenticity.
The awards ceremony highlighted categories like Best Designer, Best Emerging Talent, and Best Fashion Event, each presented by icons in the industry. Watching the winners accept their awards and share their journeys was beyond inspiring. Every story shared was a reminder that talent, when paired with passion and persistence, truly shines.
An Unforgettable Musical Tribute
The soul of the evening came alive with a powerful tribute to music legend Angie Stone, performed by National R&B Hall of Fame Inductee Gwen Dokes. Her voice filled the room with emotion, paying homage to a woman whose influence extends far beyond the stage. It was a beautiful reminder of how fashion and music move hand-in-hand, both shaping culture in unforgettable ways.
Style, Community & Creative Commerce
Before the main event, I had a chance to indulge in some delicious bites during the pre-reception, explore pop-up shops by local designers, and connect with some truly amazing people. It was networking, Detroit-style—warm, genuine, and full of love for our city and its creatives.

The Detroit Fashion Choice Awards is more than a night of glamour. It’s a platform. A statement. A celebration of culture, resilience, and bold creativity. It uplifts the trailblazers who are defining Detroit style while inspiring the next generation of designers, artists, and innovators to dream even bigger.
I left the event feeling inspired, energized, and honored to witness the brilliance blooming right here in our city.
