The Detroit Fashion Choice Awards celebrates the vibrant and ever-evolving fashion scene in the heart of the Motor City. They recognize and honor the talented individuals and businesses that shape and influence the fashion industry in Detroit. So when I found out that our organization was nominated for the “Best Fashion Organization of the Year 2023,” I was so excited!
Immediately, two questions surfaced in my mind: and Will there be a red carpet?” and “What should I wear?”
My personal style tends to gravitate towards anything that sparkles. I adore selecting statement pieces that exude glamour, particularly those adorned with sequins. However, with the holiday season behind us, I felt compelled to deviate from the usual glitter. For this special occasion, I aimed to captivate attention without relying on a sparkly dress. My thoughts naturally turned to LaShawn, the brilliant mind behind Pink Poodle Dress Boutique, renowned for her elegant selection of gowns. After conveying the desired vibe to her, she expertly curated a selection for me to peruse.
Yet, amidst the array of options, one dress stood out—the same one that had caught my eye on the mannequin. Despite trying on several dresses, my heart kept pulling me back to that particular one. Once I slipped into it, I knew it was THE ONE. It was a champagne jersey stretched long sleeve dress with a plunging v-neck and beautiful train from the Jessica Angel Collection.
When it comes to hair and makeup, I always find myself scrambling at the last minute due to a perpetual lack of time. This time, however, I resolved to seek something different. A quick search on Instagram led me to Yaya, a prominent Detroit makeup artist whose work consistently impressed me. After confirming her artistry with a friend, I promptly booked her services online, a seamless process.
To complete the look, I added huge chandelier earrings that I found at C’est Le Vie. Opting for shoes with shorter heels was a strategic choice, considering the dress’s sweeping length. As a tall woman, navigating the world of high heels presents its own challenges.
Upon arriving at her studio, I was greeted by an ambiance of elegance. The offer of water or wine exemplified the attention to detail. Opting for water, I recollected the festivities of Chuck Bennett’s birthday celebration the night before—a reminder of the city’s vibrant fashion scene. The entire makeup application experience felt like a spa treatment. It really felt like she was an artist, painting my face. It was so relaxing.
Attempting to articulate the desired look proved challenging, but Yaya’s suggestion of “soft glam” was promptly vetoed. My philosophy was clear: If I am spending money on a makeup application, I don’t want to look like myself. I want to look like somebody else- Beyonce, Kim K., just BEAT MY FACE! And beat it she did. It turned out to be so pretty. So great for the red carpet. Thank you!
Regrettably, I was unable to secure a hairstylist in time—a testament to my disconnect with the local hair scene. Any recommendations for Detroit hairstylists are warmly welcomed. Faced with this setback, I took matters into my own hands, relying on clip-ins and a wand curler sourced from Amazon. The result? Adequate, though far from extraordinary.
Reflecting on the overall look, I would rate it a solid 9/10. The absence of professional hairstyling prevented it from reaching perfection. Nonetheless, the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly our organization’s triumph, winning the coveted title of “Favorite Fashion Organization of the Year 2023.” I take immense pride in our collective efforts, grateful to contribute to Detroit’s burgeoning fashion renaissance. Beyond the glitz and glamour, the event fostered a sense of community and positivity within the fashion sphere—a testament to the city’s enduring spirit.
In conclusion, while there’s always room for improvement, I am content with the outcome. It’s an exciting time to be part of Detroit’s fashion resurgence, and I eagerly anticipate what the future holds.
