On Thursday, January 30th at 6 PM, I had the pleasure of attending the art + architecture: Castalia + Sfumato & Terraces at Woodbridge event, hosted by Todd Sykes, Vice President of New Development for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices The Loft Warehouse. This event was a remarkable blend of visual, taste, and olfactory experiences, combining craft cocktails, botanical fragrances, and contemporary residential design.
The Experience: Art Meets Architecture
The evening was a true immersion into the interplay of natural and designed elements, sparking a sense of discovery, delight, and emotional reminiscence. The highlight of the night was engaging with Dr. Kevin Peterson, the creative force behind Sfumato and Castalia, and the author of Cocktail Theory. His expertise in sensory experiences and cocktail pairings brought a unique and interactive aspect to the event, making it an unforgettable experience.
The Terraces at Woodbridge: A Modern Addition to a Historic Neighborhood
Situated at the corner of Avery and Merrick Streets, The Terraces at Woodbridge is a striking new condominium development just a block from the Woodbridge Pub. With a variety of modern floorplans, this project seamlessly blends contemporary architecture with the neighborhood’s historic charm.
Key features of The Terraces at Woodbridge include:
- (4) two-level 2-bedroom, 2.5-bath townhomes
- (3) three-level 2 or 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath townhomes, all with rooftop terraces and backyards
- (2) flats featuring 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, private rooftop terraces, and 1-car garages
- Detached garages, with select townhomes offering 2-car garages
- A pared-down modern take on the traditional house profile, making it a unique addition to Woodbridge
- Pre-sales underway, allowing buyers to select their unit and customize finishes
- Construction began in November 2023, with an expected occupancy in early 2025
As someone who deeply appreciates both real estate and design, it was exciting to see how The Terraces at Woodbridge merges modern innovation with classic Detroit charm.
Dr. Kevin Peterson: Unlocking the Science of Scent and Flavor
One of the most fascinating parts of the night was hearing from Dr. Kevin Peterson. Having personally ranked Castalia as one of Detroit’s must-visit spots, I was thrilled to gain deeper insight into his work.
Kevin’s background is nothing short of intriguing—starting in kitchens, earning a BA in physics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, and later co-founding Sfumato and Castalia. His passion for exploring the boundaries of scent and flavor was evident throughout his talk, where he guided guests through the science behind pairing scents with cocktails.
We even got to sample scented cocktails, and let me tell you—the Old Fashioned and Espresso Martini pairings were a standout! The fusion of perfume and cocktail was nothing short of sensory magic.
Financing with Huntington Bank
A special shoutout to Susie Edwards of Huntington Bank, the event’s sponsor and the preferred lender for The Terraces at Woodbridge. Susie introduced us to Huntington’s Home for Good mortgage loan product, which is designed to provide wider access to lending, down payment assistance, and home-buying education for historically under-resourced communities. If you’re considering a purchase at The Terraces at Woodbridge, Susie is a fantastic resource for financing options.
